Laylatul-Bara’at or Shabbé-Bara’at
(the night of Freedom)
The night of the half-Sha’baan (Laÿlatun-niswfe-sha’baan), i.e. the 15th night, is of a great value in Islam.
According to several hadiths, we note that the holy Prophet ( S A.W )named this holy night in several ways and among these are the four following ones:
1- Laÿlat-ul-Bara’at (the Night of Freedom)
2- Laÿlat-un-Najaat (the Night of the Salute)
3- Laÿlat-ul-Mubaarakah (the Night of Blessings)
4- Laÿlat-us-Swaak (the Night of the Testament)
A “tafseer” (comment) on these names explain us that those who observe this whole night in ibaadats (prayers), will have the four benefits corresponding to these names, i.e.,:
They will get Freedom on the other mortals, which means that they will not depend on other human like themselves.
They will have safety (of Allah) from hell, i.e. which means that they will be saved of the punishment of the fire.
They will gather the blessings that Allah reserved for them during that night.
They will obtain the testament of forgiveness, i.e. Allah ta’ala will forgive them their sins.
It is also said that during this famous night, Allah ta’ala decides about the particular attributes to his creatures. For example, he decides the number of the creatures who will take birth, number of his creatures who will get death, forgiveness, food, etc… and this during a whole year until next Laÿla-tul-Bara’at.
According to a hadith, the beloved wife of the holy Prophet ( S A.W ), Hazrat Aïsha Siddiqa (r.a), was once looking for the Messenger of Allah during that 15th blessed night of Sha’baan and she ended up by finding him in the qabarastaan (cemetery) of Jannatul-Baqi’. And on her request, the beloved Prophet of Allah answered that Allah ta’ala come down in the last sky (that which is closer to the ground, so called Asmaa-ad-dunya) and addresses to his servants who are awaked during that night in these terms : “O my servants, whoever has needs as regards life, blessings, food, favours, benefits, cure, peace, etc. so ask me and I will grant to him/her”. And the beloved Prophet of Allah also specified that Allah forgives, during this night, as many his servants, with the number of hairs which are on the herds of the tribe of “Bani-Kalb” (which was a tribe that had a strong number of animals). [Tirmizi shareef vol.1, Ibne-Maja shareef vol.1, Mishkaat shareef vol.2 ]
Let us quote another hadith concerning Laÿlat-ul-Bara’at, the holy Prophet ( S A.W )called Hazrat Aïsha Siddiqa (r.a) and asked her: “Do you know what benefits are in this blessed night of 15th Sha’baan?” and Hazrat Aïsha Siddiqa (r.a) replied that there’s only Allah and his Prophet who knows that. And the holy Prophet ( S A.W )to specify that Allah write the names of all those who will take birth in this year and also the names of all those who will die in this year there and the names of all those who will have so much and so much food in that year etc. until next Laÿlat-ul-Bara’at [Baÿhiqi shareef and Mishkaat shareef vol.2 ]
We hope that all our muslim brothers and sisters will, through theirs ibaadats special Laÿlat-ul-Bara’at and other ibaadats, collect the benefits of Allah subhaanahu-wa-ta’ala during this blessed night and we wish them a great Layla-tul-Bara’at Mubarak.
Special Ibaadats recommended for Layla-tul-Bara’at
Since the night in Islam begins upon sunset, as soon as we end namaz Maghrib, achieve 6 raka’ats nafils in the following way (3 times 2 raka’ats) of Swalaat-ul-Awwaabeen:
The 2 first rakaats with the special niyyat (intention): “Li tu’lil unssi bil khaÿr” i.e. that Allah ta’ala grant us a long and happy life along with his favours. After these 2 raka’ats, read one time the sourah Yaaseen and the du’a Niswfé-Sha’baan.
The 2 following raka’ats with the special niyyat “Daafi’il balaayah” i.e., that Allah preserve us of all misfortunes and calamities. Then read once again the sourah Yaaseen and the du’a Niswfe-Sha’baan.
The 2 last raka’ats with the niyyat “Li-wussatir-rizq” i.e. that Allah Ta’ ala grant us food and other resources for our subsistence. Then read once again the sourah Yaaseen and the du’a Niswfe-Sha’baan.
Then, after the namaz Isha, achieve 12 raka’ats of namaz nafils (2 by 2 raka’ats) as follows: in each raka’at, after sourah al-Faatihah, read 10 times sourah al-Ikhlaass (“Qul huwallaahu ahad…”). After the salaam, read (using a tasbeeh) 100 times Daroud shareef, 100 times the 1st kalimah (kalimah-twayyib), 100 times the 2nd kalimah (kalimah-shahaadat) and 100 times the 3rd kalimah (kalimah-tamjeed). Then go into sajdah (prostration) to make your du’as (supplications). [check our link on Kalimahs]
Also, accomplish during that night, all the ibaadats which you are able to perform, namaz nafils for example the swalaat-ul-tasbeeh, swalaat-ut-tahajjud, reading of the holy Koran, Darood shareef, tasbeehs and wazeefahs. Pray according to your capacity. And observe the roza during the 13th, 14th and 15th days of Sha’baan and make charity. In countries where it is possible, one can accomplish the sunnat which consists to go for ziyaarat (visit) of the qabarastaan (cemetery) during this blessed night. For those who have the capacity to spend the whole night in ibaadats, will be of a great benefit.
Make du’as so that deen-e-Islaam progresses in the hearts of people. And do not forget, in your du’as, those who are suffering, those who are in misery and sorrow and also those who undergo injustice and so on…
May Allah ta’ala accept our du’as and grant all of us his protection. Aameen!
